Window cranks

Post by Kep »

Most of my windows work but the cranks spin free for a bit and seem to catch after a few turns. I have not taken them apart as I do not really know what I'm dealing with yet. I had one that the crank handle was stripped but since I put in two fantastic fans I had to handles left from the roof vent. so now I have only one left. Mine is a 1975 so the windows are whatever they used in that year.

What is a good procedure for properly diagnosing what really is the issue.
Are the cranks repairable?
Can the crank mechanisms still be purchased?
Are their replacement window assemblies that fit in place of these?

Kep, look through this thread and see if your window “operators” look like mine. I need to check the eBay link for the parts I ordered and see if it’s still good. Regardless, if needed, we can hopefully find a source for those again.

Hmmmm, I just looked at a 1975 brochure..... I don't think your windows are anything like mine.......

Hopefully, someone here will have the information you need.

Well I called and bothered Chuck Cayo and he said they are readily available still. He said mine is a 762c slant sill torque operator (left hand). I checked a few places and they seem to range from $11 to $19 some are free shipping. I ordered one to try . Then if it works I will disassemble the bad one to see what the issue is.

Well I found them to be riveted in and am a bit concerned about mounting the new ones properly as they are not pop rivets.

Kep, look at the thread I mentioned in my previous post. The original operators in my windows were/are riveted in, like yours. You can use a drill to remove the head of the rivets. See the pictures I posted.

If you don’t have access to both ends of the rivet, maybe you can use an Olympic rivet? Maybe another call to Chuck to see how he does it? Let us know what you determine
