Rock-a-Bye Baby

Post by silverloaf »

We got a break in the weather and were finally able to get our trailer into storage today. It has been sitting in our driveway for 18 months undergoing restoration.

It pulled remarkably well considering the pot holes and buckled pavement that define Michigan winters. There were lots of heads turning as we motored toward our destination. Like many of you have expressed, it's great feeling of accomplishment to bring a legend back to life!

I wanted to mention that we installed a cover over the trailer. We purchased an Adco Designer Series cover (shown in the website below). We did it not so much for environmental protection as for a deterrent against vandalism.

The cover has received mixed reviews. I can only say this cover exceeded my expectations in construction, ease of installation and tie-down strategy. The rounded corners on our trailer prevented any rough edges from tearing the fabric.

Although sized for the trailer's shell, the cover had enough compliance to extend over the tongue. The trailer is absolutely unrecognizable under wrap.

Here's a typical website for purchase. For our 30P, we chose the size 26' 1"- 28' 6"

IMHO you deserve a standing ovation for the restoration.

Well...thank you, Salty. The test will be when we hit the road.

Funny thing happened before putting it in storage. It seems I forgot to take the length of the WDH into account when I replaced the 7-pin harness. About a foot short!

I'm trying to decide whether to purchase a jumper/extension for $20 (easy) or install a longer harness at $55+ (a lot of work).

Any comments/thoughts from the forum?

Easy is quicker, but always feels less permanent to me. This probably won’t be the last time you have to change out that 7 way plug, so how about something like this....

How about those chains? Is the length OK on them?

I agree. I don't like extensions either. However, I may have to resort to an extension if I can replace the harness before we move.

Thanks for the tip on the chains. They are long enough because they were originally sized for the length of the WDH.

Regarding the Harness. I myself would fab it from scratch as my OCD would kick into overdrive and I probably wouldn't sleep until I re-did the cable. That said, the logical answer is use the extension in the short term and plan to replace the cable later in the long term, when time allows.
