50 amp AC upgrade, 45 amp Boondocker converter, and 12v Distribution Panel

Post by KYAvion »

So I talked to someone in tech support at Progressive Dynamics, as well as Randy at Bestconverter.com, and both agreed that the factory 8 AWG wire between the batteries and the converter in my 30R is awfully small given the distance (approximately 25+ feet). Randy pointed out that the biggest concern is voltage drop, but that the 12v system was designed with 8 AWG wire and has worked fine with the factory 45 amp converter.

I had considered using a combination 50 amp AC panel/12v distribution box/converter (Progressive Dynamics PD4560), but the smallest converter size available in such a unit is 60 amps. However, since the wire size is only 8 AWG and I really don’t want to go through the trouble of upgrading the wire size, I’ll be replacing the factory 45 amp converter with a deck mount 45 amp Boondocker converter, and installing a separate 50/30 amp split Progressive Dynamics AC panel (PD55B006), along with a separate 12v distribution panel.
