Cab doors

Post by Tarnished »

Currently replacing the hanging closet doors on my 26' Travelcader. The 5 doors removed weighed 82 lbs, the replacements, recessed panel maple, weigh 23 lbs.
gotta love, or hate, particleboard.

I'm very happy for you on the weight savings. I recall an old hot rod saying about finding 1600 ways to remove an ounce and you'll remove 100 pounds.
I'm sure they look gorgeous as well.

Where did the weight savings come from in each new door versus original?

Any effect on keeping the doors true to their jams or stiles?

The original doors were simple slabs cut from particle board. The PB we use in the shop
weighs 110# 4'X8'x3/4". A higher grade then available at a big box, but it all weighs a lot.
The new doors are frame and panel. See pic. The stiles and rails are maple the panels are
1/4" maple PW.The clear

finish will add a couple lbs.

The Cab doors in '88 30P mimic typical residential construction. The rails and stiles are pine with mitered corners. The center panels are raised and constructed of plywood; some center panels are mirrors.

Is this the type of door you removed and replaced?

No, the doors removed were slabs of 3/4" veneered particleboard.

Wow!

I forgot your earlier response did say slabs of PB.

Were they factory original?

Yes original on a '77 and probably all of the '70s units based on pics I've seen. The raised panels
came in under Fleetwood. I like the simplicity of a recessed panel for a trailer. Granted for a home we would use solid wood for the panel but I'm also trying to reduce weight. Raised panels are also more labor intensive.

That door looks very nice. Sounds like you may be a professional cabinet maker.

When you made the door did you just make the outside frame and tack the panel to the back? Or is it recessed in there?
