Refrigerator Replacement

Post by silverloaf »

One of the items we did not check out when we bought our '88 30-P trailer was the refrigerator. It appears to have been replaced in the last 20 years.

In the event the fridge is suspect to functional issues, I'll be searching for a replacement.

Any recommendations or points to consider? There are some 3-way power models that are intriguing.

Thanks for your input in advance!

Under what conditions will you be using it?

If my trailer hadn't come with a new propane/110v fridge, I probably would have just installed a regular 110v compressor fridge like I did in our prior trailer. I ran it off an inverter so I could power it going down the road, as well as so it would have power from the batteries during temporary power outages. It worked great, but if I did a lot of boondocking then I'd probably stick with propane.

The original fridge in our 1987 34W was replaced sometime before we bought it. A larger, black Norcold was installed and is a 2-way (110V/propane). In the last 5 years of ownership, I have not missed the 12V mode. If I had a 12V mode, maybe I'd miss it if I didn't have it??? I wonder.....

You don't run it off the 12v when traveling?

Nope, it switches to propane after I unplug the AC. As rare as tunnels are, it is usually no problem to pull over and shut off the fridge before going through, and I do the same if we need to fuel up the F250 enroute to wherever we are going.

Sorry...misread your post and thought you were saying it was 12v or 110v, but that you never used the 12v.

I wonder how many people let their fridges run on propane at tunnels and gas stations.
