Suggestions for more site activity...

Hey gang,

An observation I’ve made about my habits on this forum and others I frequent, is that this is the only one that I have to mark a box (I think, I’ve never done it) to get a reminder when there has been activity on a thread I’ve posted on. I know this is a mom and pop sized site and I love it. But I would like to see the interactions and membership grow. One good thing (depending on your view) about the Walmart of vintage travel trailer sites is that you are automatically reminded via email when a topic is updated. I didn’t used to like that, but I’ve come to realize that it drives me back to the site. Whereas on this forum, I have to go through several steps to consciously get to where I can see if something has happened.

Is it possible, or even desirable, to have that feature here? I think it would help resolve many of the one and done posts... remember the faraday cage guy? What happens to him? I really want to know.

In the User Control Panel (Upper right of main page, click on your userid, select User Control Panel), select Board Preferences, then Edit Notification Options.
That should get you an email when a thread gets updated.

That's a good point and there may be a way to change the default setting. As Nralifer said, however, it's under Board Preferences, but within Posting Defaults. There's an option there to turn notifications on.

Please share any more ideas about how to increase interactions. Facebook is obviously a great medium for that, but it lacks the organization that a forum has. It's too bad the forum can't behave more like Facebook with regard to tagging, notifications, etc. I imagine there may be forums with these capabilities out there, but then cost becomes an issue, and as it stands costs associated with this site already aren't being met.

BTW have you tried the Active Topics or Unanswered Topics Link?

I went in to my UCP as suggested and clicked all the boxes so we'll see how that works.

I navigate the site through either “new” or “active” topics.

My thought is that if the preferences are set by default to get notifications, that may get more people back, or at least remind them.

I don’t Facebook so...

Nothing yet, though there have been posts to threads I’ve posted on... I’ll dig around some more to see if I missed something.

It's under Board Preferences, and then under Edit Posting Defaults.

This is a good argument to make this default, and then opt out of a thread if you’d like.
Right? We want more engagement and activity here, perhaps a little hand holding wouldn’t be horrible. I know I could use it...

I installed a mod so that Notifications about replies are now ON by default. Unfortunately, this change can only apply to new users. Keep the suggestions coming!
