1987 34W - Bearing and Grease Seal project
Posted: Thu Jul 13, 2017 8:27 am
I got to devote some time to the bearing and grease seal project that I have been wanting to do on our 1987 34W. I had ordered, based on available information, The following:
Inner: bearing Timken 25580, cup/race Timken 25520, grease seal National 413470
Outer: bearing Timken LM67048, cup/race Timken LM67010
(I am editing this first post after having found a mixture of 5.2K and 6K axles on our trailer. Everything is the same between the two axles with the exception of the outer bearing and race. I have found a good source for all of the parts, and list them here. I will also add them at the end of this thread, and will see about pinning this list to the Running Gear section:

You will need a 1-1/2" socket for the hub castle nut.
The first axle I worked on was the curbside rear. Obviously, this is a greasy, messy job, but it went well. To get the cup/race out, I used a small chisel, reaching through the hub opening to get on the lip of the cup/race, and hammered my way around the race little by little until it dropped out. Installing the new cups/races was easy..... tapped them in little by little until it was seated where it was supposed to be. For the inner race/cup, the old race worked well to lay on top of the new race to tap the new one into the hub.
The lists that I had seen showed that the grease seal was a Tekonsha 5606, but while researching I found a National 413470. It appeared to be a much better seal (as reflected in the price!!). They fit as they should, and I am very glad I decided to use them.
Moved ahead to the middle axle. Was surprised when I went to replace the outer bearing and cup/race that it was different! Both were just a bit larger than the previous axle. After doing some research, determined that this hub is rated just a little higher than the other one, and will use bearing 15123 and race/cup 15245. The same was found on the front axle. The inner bearing and race/cup was the same, as was the grease seal. Since I didn't have those new parts, I repacked the ones that were there and reinstalled them. I will replace those once I determine what I have on the street side of the trailer. Looks like I will have a few spare outer bearings and races. That's OK... they are good to have and were not that expensive.
So, that project is almost 1/2 done, the trailer is back on the ground, and we are preparing for a weekend at the lake.
