Replacing tub drain flange in a 1988 34X

Howdy folks...

Had some leakage around the drain flange in our tub that was getting down underneath. Took off the decorative board covering the front of the tub and got to work. Took ordering a couple special tools, but they got the job done. It sure would've been nice if the tub drain was at the front of the tub, and not the back!

Not the most glamorous topic in the world, but maybe it'll be useful for anyone facing a similar problem. Please feel free to offer criticism/advice. We're just DIY-ers, so any knowledge shared with us is always appreciated!

Hey Dave, how did you know it was your drain flange and not something else? Also what needs to be done in order to gain access to the tub like in your video?

Just an fyi. I'm replacing the tub drain on my '89 32S. The oem is 1 1/4" which nobody makes, or like hens teeth. There are kits to replace the drain with the trap, that is special to this application. Recpro is one, etrailer has another I think. The problem is their kits use 1 1/4" and 1 1/2" is easier to find. So for me it is much easier to use 1 1/2" and adapters where needed to mate up to the oem 1 1/4".

When you get the solution together and installed, please post the particulars (including what you bought and where.....) so if anyone else needs to do the same, they won't have to reinvent the wheel.

Good luck with your project.

Okay, so here is what I came up with on my '89 32S, which is probably similar to all others in that vicinity. Sorry, I would have posted earlier but was having problems getting past the pop up ads.

Coming in from the right is the original 1 1/4" abs, to an adapter to 1 1/2" 45*, the rubber slip joint, 1 1/2" abs straight piece, and the trap which is 1 1/2". The drain is from recpro. It has longer threaded portion which is needed for the flange nut and then the nut that screws onto the bottom to hold the trap, otherwise the ones at the stores are too short to thread the complete assembly together.

Also, from the manufacturer, they only used about a 2" wide piece of wood to support the bottom of the shower pan, which probably led to the cracking of the trap. So I put a piece across the front you can see in the picture, and another at the rear. Should support everything better and along with the rubber slip joint remain flexible.
