Entry door hinge covering

Howdy all! I'm in the process of restoring a 57 Avion Regal 26 and need some pictures/info on covering that ugly steel piano hinge that holds the door on. I think I read somewhere that it was originally covered with vinyl (Naugahyde, etc.) and found fragments of mummified cloth when I removed the door. Maybe I'm crazy and should just paint it?
