Weight Distribution Hitch Size?

Post by deminimis »

I've been towing for decades, but I've never needed a weight distribution (sway control) hitch until now. '88 34X. Hard to read, but looks like GVWR is 9500. Let's round that up to 10K (and/or 1k tongue). So, the question is when choosing a WDH, is it okay, perhaps even advisable, to go with a 14,000 rated WDH? Sway control is more important than weight distribution for my setup. Thanks!!

PS: I have a 30k Torklift Magnum hitch, but Troklift's WDH hitches are way over the top (30k tow/3k tongue), so looks like that's not going to be an option.

I have used a Curt 14,000 lb. WD hitch setup for years with our 1987 34W and 1995 F250 and it does very well. My 1995 F250 rides like a truck, and tows well. One thing I highly recommend is to pay attention to proper loading of the trailer.... THAT can have a huge effect on sway.

I don't love it yet, that's for sure. Even my boat tows better (of course I completely rebuilt that UK made trailer after i got it home with proper axles, disc brakes, larger wheels and a proper coupler). Hopefully fresh shocks will help the Avion (the ones on there are shot).

Wow!!! THAT'S a BOAT!!!

(Your 1988 34X has the Adjust-a-Ride suspension? If you haven't already, check the posts in the suspension section that gives details of replacement shocks. I know I commented in a recent thread, and I think I pointed to my brake/shock project thread).
