Need replacement axles

Post by Texaspsdx »

Just purchased a 1989 34V. I had the torsion axles that need replacement. Anyone have a source for replacement axles?

Can I ask what is wrong with the ones you have?

They have collapsed due to age. KO-Lo axle rubber is only effective for 15-20 years. These are bottomed out with no travel.

Have been contact with Dexter. They can make based on serial number on the axle, if I can find it. If not they will build based on measurements that I have to furnish.

Wow! That's great news. I never thought Dexter was able to do that.

The OEM rubber bushings were were originally used on 50s-60s Ford Galaxie lower control arms. I was able to get a set for four of our axles from a mom-and-pop parts store.

Depending on what you find out, you might also try Colin Hyde. I ordered a pair from him for my prior Airstream.

Will do. Sent Dexter pics of the axle tags today. They are researching if they still have records to duplicate my axles. Hopefully they do.

It’s been 6 years ago, but I paid $1400 for two axles and that included shipping. I also went with a 32 degree down angle instead of the lower 22.5 degree angle. These axles also had a grease fitting for maintenance.

Where did you order your axles from? Dexter is telling me my axle tags do not have enough numbers. Do all 1989 Avions use the same torsion axle?

I ordered mine from Colin Hyde (info in post above). It’s been several years, but I believe he just had me measure the distance from one mounting bracket to the other. I’m not sure whether the same torsion axles are used for all 89’s.
