Is there a quiet water pump?

Post by KYAvion »

I’ve got a PAR 36950-1000 belt driven water pump that has served me well, and in my opinion, is pretty quiet. I thought it would be nice to have a back-up pump, so I tried a couple other pumps out since the 36950-1000 is expensive to buy new. The 36950-1000 isn’t made anymore, but the 36950-2000 is the same thing and can be seen here: https://www.amazon.com/Jabsco-36950-200 ... 66&sr=8-18

I tried both a Flojet 1202.1050 04406-143A Quad II Water Pump 'Quiet Quad' and a Precitrade Shurflo 2088-554 Fresh Water Pump, 12 Volts, 3.5 Gallons Per Minute, 45 Psi.

Both the Flojet and the Shurflo primed right away and had great flow, but I thought they were loud compared to the PAR
36950-1000. The Flojet was quieter than the Shurflo, but they both created a vibration/hum that I could not isolate, and that seemed to resonate throughout the camper.

Anyone have experience with a pump that is truly quiet, or at least doesn’t sound somewhat like a small air compressor running in the background?

Rather than search for the elusive quiet water pump, I suggest developing a mounting system that de-couples the noise transmission through a floor as well reducing the radiated noise from the pump itself.

Below is a website that describes how to construct a sound absorption for radiated noise.

Thanks for the link, and I did consider that. If I had more room, I’d probably do something like what’s described in the link. However, for the water pump I’ve got an area not much larger than a shoebox, and I want the pump to be easily accessible.

My current pump is not very noticeable as is, so I’ll probably just get a used one on eBay and rebuild it. Thought I’d ask here first though in case anyone has found something better.

I lucked out and found what looks to be a brand new, or possibly minimally used, pump on eBay for a great price. I’ll be installing this one as my primary pump, and will hang onto my current pump as a spare.

Interesting design. I would think the belt drive would mitigate some of the vibrational issues with the OEM design. Care to share the make and model of what you bought?

This is a Par/Jabsco 36950-2000. My other one is a 36950-1000, which is essentially the same pump. The location of the pressure switch is in a different spot on the base, but functionally they are the same.

I’ve been under the impression that these pumps were standard equipment on older Avions and Airstreams, but I could be wrong about that.
