Hub sizes

I keep reading that people are putting 12” brakes on their 34’ trailers. I just put a tape to my hub and it’s a 10” hub and it’s stamped 10.9 on the hub. I have a 34v. Is this a normal thing? I’m pretty sure 12” brakes aren’t going to fit a 10” hub. The brake assembly has a sticker that reads Kelsey Hayes Co. RH 602027 LH 602028 use K.H. 87413 & 87415 linings only. So it appears that I have 10” hubs and brakes. Unless I’m missing something here.

Maybe it has to do with the model year of your 34V? Our 1987 definitely has 12” brake assemblies.

That’s what I was thinking. Which means that I have 3500 lb axles and not 5200 or 6000 like the newer units. Which isn’t a bad thing if you look at the cost of the new 12” brakes to fit a 4 bolt mounting like mine has. Although I would like to have the extra capacity a 12” system with the heavier axles would allow, I’m not going to try and reinvent the horse.

Brake and spring sizes are really governed by the Gross Vehicle Weight (or GVW). The GVW refers to the weight of the trailer plus it's cargo-carrying capacity. The decal on the left front side of the trailer should tell you its GVW. You might even find some additional information on tire size.

I believe the OP is talking about the brake assembly mount being 4 bolt not the wheel lugs.

This is correct. The trailer has the standard 6x5.5 hubs. The bearing numbers are 3500lb bearings according to dexter and e-trailer. I just ordered complete brakes and hubs from e-trailer with free shipping in the lower 48. I have access to a barge shipper that charges very little to get things from Washington state to Alaska as long as you’re in no hurry. I have an issue with one axle that concerns me and I’m probably going to remove it and take it to a good shop to see about fixing it. Might need a new spindle from what I’m seeing. It’s on the center axle passenger side. I’m assuming that those tires take the most abuse since the other two look just fine. Could have been from the PO before me though.

So what size did you end of getting and where. Please. I have the same issue with my 81 34v. I ordered the 12 inch 5 hole mount and it won’t work.

Have you looked at the casting numbers on the brake drum(s)? That would pinpoint what you have.

Thanks Razorback. I was going to do some stuff on her this weekend but as you know here in Arkansas it’s a bit wintry. Watching the snow right now. Thanks again I might need your help on this one.
