Broken L-400

Post by Jason »

Does anyone have a broken L-400 they would be willing to part with. It looks like this. I am considering modeling some new parts for it and potentially producing them out of something other than pot metal as a COVID Project, Thanks!

I hope someone makes a donation to your project. Your skills could be a huge benefit to a select group of appreciative people.

@Overdrive To be honest, that replacement looks pretty low rent. I'll give you that it is functional, but the installs that I've seen leave much to be desired/ not easy on the eyes.

@Jason In the past, I've done a latch replacement part, made from silica bronze as I recall. Of the two versions of the L-400, the locking method is different. There are 2 critical parts that differ in form and function. I can describe the variants of the latch, but not the other piece involved in the locking sequence.
In Summary, the L-400 Mark II (Best name I could come up with short notice) the latch has an additional lower edge or rail not in the Mark I version. You can modify a Mark II latch to work on a Mark I lock, but not vice versa.
I do have a PAIR of spare assemblies, but they are both functional and parting with one of them will cost $$$

Yeah I would like/want a lock set as a spare. But if you can’t find anything you gotta lock up the trailer somehow.

Keep a watch on ebay. I purchased a new L-400 last month for $400 new in the original box. I lucked up and found a new in the package repair kit two weeks ago. The repair kit cost me $160 with shipping. I found the repair kit on an Airstream forum.

That NIB L400 is a unicorn. Keep in mind, there were four flavors of the L400. two each of the short latch and long latch versions.
