Replacing 18" fans with new Maxxairs

Post by DBarrett »

A few years ago I replaced my original fans on our 1978 28M with Maxxairs and it has been a huge improvement. I shared the material I used and how I did it on Facebook and a lot of people asked if I would sell them the flanges I made. After giving it some thought I came up with a price and offered up the Max Flange on a Facebook page. I've shipped 7 sets at this point and kind of testing the waters but if you are interested please check out my Facebook page or ask questions here or email me at barrettbuilt@yahoo.com.

That makes for a really nice installation! And certainly nothing wrong with a little entrepreneurial enterprise!

Good luck, and thanks for helping fellow Avion owners..... not only with how-to instructions, but also as a source for materials so they don’t have to waste time reinventing the wheel .

Does the XB have the larger fans? If so, I don’t see why this would not work.

I’ve got 3 max air fans to install in place of original 2 speed power vents. I know I have to square up holes at the rounded corners. My questions are: will the originals be riveted in or attached with sheet metal screws? Is there an aluminum frame under the outside skin or will I be attaching new flange to that outside skin? Would vintage trailer supply Butyl tape be a good choice for top to flange, followed by eternabond Alumibond over screw heads and flange edge. Keep in mind I’m living in this baby and once I open the hole I won’t be finished until the new fan is installed. I hope to never have to remove the outer flanges again, but...you never know.
