110v / 48v to 12v and 48v inverter

Post by Kep »

Well when I got this trailer my intent was to make something I could boondock with and enjoy Arizona's out of the way places. That is once we finish our house. After a bit of research I stumbled onto Nissan Leaf batteries. You can do 24v 48v or 72v. I decided on 48v to reduce wire size and improve inverter efficiency and as well as more choices of inverter options as 72v is rare. Tesla batteries would be my first choice but too much money and you can't repair or replace cells like you can with Leaf batteries.

I have the 110v and charging inverter 110v output done. I need to finish the 48v solar and 30 amp 48v dc to 12v dc converter. I have a switch to turn on / off the DC to DC converter at 12v @30 amps. The solid state relay trigger is limited to 3 - 32v so I have a resister to drop the voltage to a little under 24v. The relay is rated for 40 amps at 60v so I should be good as my max is 58.3.

I had to run flex conduit from the fuse box and ran 110v out to the inverter and back to the fuses box using the inverter 40 amp rated pass through. It took 36' to run down the drivers side cabinets under the dinette and to the passenger side bench seat. Seems to work well as my batteries are charging and the AC and the vacuum works fine on shore power at the same time.

I literally had to drill and route the flex conduit through all the cabinets. I had to take out the entire dinette and benches to route things.

I chose the Nissan Leaf not for it's maximum power storage, power output or compact size. I chose it because it's easy to service and repair as well being capable of expansion with the addition of more 48v packs. It also for now has support of an aftermarket BMS and PCB combination that makes it an easy system to install and monitor on my phone. It is only about a 50 amph battery (being that it is used) but when you figure in conversion from 48v to 12v it is really a substantial power source for dry camping. It also will easily power all my 110v AC power needs short of powering the AC long term.

The BMS is set for a safe 58.3 volts max however my inverter is only capable of 58.4 in it's LIPO setting. This forces my BMS to turn off the charge input and log a high charge volts event. While no harm is done it is an issue I'm not too fond of. The max safe voltage for the battery is actually 58.4 so I don't really think I have an issue. The BMS has a separate charge and supply cutoff so battery output is not effected when the high charge volts event is logged.

Note: I chose a 3000 watt Singineer 48v 3000 watt inverter and could not be more pleased with both their tech support and overall system cost. The unit so far performs very well and is even capable of starting and powering my AC for a very short time on batteries. It has no issue on shore power as the pass through is rated for 40 amps. My trailer however is only wired for 30amp service. I wanted to be able to power individually a microwave, coffee pot, toaster oven and electric griddle. All seem to operate individually just fine on battery power. I will need to test to see if cooking a meal is fully supported on my battery without solar input. I however would not power very many of them on battery power at one time. Once my 800 watts of solar panels are on line I suspect it will be capable of multiple appliance operations while in direct sunlight but time will tell.

PS: I will post a photo of my service panel with the mods done as I see I only posted the OEM configuration photo.

Sounds like a really nice set up with lots of power to spare. How much do those Leaf batteries typically cost?

Well @ 7 cells for 48v and their discount of 10% they were a bit less than $80.00 each with shipping and the BMS with PCB was a bit less than $65.00

That is an impressive system you are putting together. Thank you for sharing the detail and the pictures.

For our particular situation, I don't anticipate ever needing to install a system like that........ but if I ever do!
