What did yo uhave to do with the LED bulbs, since they were "a hair too long"?

The LEDs were hair too long, I would maybe check out some other styles they have. Definitely get red though, the clears will glow pink through the lenses

The camera doesn't have any memory backup so no recording available out of the box as far as I know

Nothing, they still fit, just one side touches the lenses
