Roof vent fan insert

Post by 3PuttHut »

1988 Avion 34V: Is there a fan insert that fits the almost 14” roof vents? I see Vortex, Maxxair, Fan Tastic, make an insert that installs from the inside without changing out roof dome, etc. Apparently the inserts are simple to install & will have the dual fan options. Thanks.

That sounds too easy. How do these retrofit fans attach to the dome cover to open and close?

All the newer fans require some surgery around the roof opening because the housing ( not the sealing flange) requires a 14" square hole plus some clearance. I had to do it to get the best function and sealing on the roof.

Here’s the link. It’s just one of several.

I looked at the website. What I see is a retrofit unit that drops into the opening created by the flange of the OEM fan. The fan and cover have to removed. The fan insert installs from the roof. The new flange sits on top of the old.

If you are ok with a manual opening ventilator, this might work for you. I recommend examining the condition of the original flange and sealant first. Camping World rates it at 3.9 out of 5 stars with 18 responding. I would examine the responses as a barometer of function and installation.

Thanks for the advice. My vents are all manually operated anyway.

That fan won’t work. The Avion fan and opening are very rounded on the corners and just a tad smaller than 14 inch opening. I fought with my fans and the covers for a year. I finally found some three speed fans on Amazon bought two and I will be doing some surgery on my roof in a week or so install I g these new fans and removing my old ones. The outer roof covers were bad.one was cracked the other was just jacked up with stuff my uncle put on it. Anyway. To get new new originals would cost me 250/350 dollars shipped.
I bought two sets of electric fans for 200 on amazon shipped to my house.
The old fans were great for nostalgia but they sucked in function.

I installed 3 MaxxAir fans on our '88 30P. I cut out the corner inserts and squared up the skin. There is roof structure on all four sides.

I found the inserts provided no structural support to the roof; they were mainly provided a surface to conform to the OEM fans with rounded corners.

Most of my time was spent sealing up the gap between the fan' sealing flange and the roof skin. The flanges are flat; the roof isn't. There were places where I had to double up on the butyl tape. After I anchored the fan with screws, I lapped the flanges with an Eternabond-type tape.

No leaks after 3 years.

I just replaced both fans on my 31XB. I’ve been really getting in it. Fixed the storage doors also.

As for the fans...the structure HAS the 14x14 braced opening. Once you remove he found flanged existing fan housing you just need to cut away the metal rounded corners to square up the opening. It took me about three hours to do the whole job on both front and rear fans.I can taie some pics. The job was really easy. I just used
a cut off wheel to cut away the aluminum. I used butyl tape for sealant. These are the parts I used. I drilled and used brass screws.

I can’t say much about 14” openings since my trailer has 18” openings. I have two maxair fans that I’m replacing the old fans with. I have to make a 14” opening that will fit inside the 18” ones on the trailer currently. I was really hoping to find an old 18” fan setup somewhere but that isn’t happening. Good luck with your project, I know I could use it on mine :D .
