Batteries not charging

Post by Jtholland757@att.net »

We’ve noticed that when on shore power our batteries are losing their charge, although they are retaining enough to keep the fridge running cold. They charged up during the tow over Christmas(250 miles one way) but are showing low today as per the monitor panel. We keep the 12 volt kill switch on at all times as per owners manual, but the power on light and 12 volt kill light have never worked. We are getting 120 into trailer and out of all the outlets and lights work set up like this. I believe the converter charge circuit is not working, but being “yesterday I couldn’t spell shock absorber and today I are one”, I need some guidance in how to troubleshoot this issue. I have a decent multimeter and half a brain so can follow simple directions. I’m sending a couple of attachments for a visual. The fuses are good. Thanks in advance

Either your batteries aren’t holding a charge like they should or your converter is going bad, or a combination of both. You could take a multimeter and check the output reading on the converter terminals. However, if your converter is original, I’d personally go ahead and replace it with a Boondocker or Progressive Dynamics. Check out this link... viewtopic.php?f=2&t=889

On my '84 there's a large fuse inline by the battery. Your's may have one as well. Mine actually stopped charging after a power outage that drained the battery. Due to the skirting and snow I wouldn't be figuring out why until spring.

Neither lights on the panel work on our '88 30P. I think they are just burned out.

While tracing the wires behind the panel awhile back, a previous owner had by-passed the ammeter. I have yet to go back and look at the wiring diagram to determine what 12V power source fed into it; perhaps there was some leakage that affected battery charge.
