LED tail lights for 1987 34W

Post by Razorback »

Another project I want to document here for others is the installation of Bargman LED tail lights. These will be direct replacements on 1986 thru 1990 Avion non-basement-model trailers. The new lights referenced here are LED for the brake lights, incandescent for the reverse lights.

I ordered Bargman #47-84-008 from Jet.com a couple of years ago. Looking at them now, I think they mistakenly had them listed then as a pair for the same price that they have them now for a single assembly. I got a really good deal..... Got 2 for less than $50 delivered to my door!

I hope this post has all of the information you might need to get yours replaced, but feel free to ask questions.... I'll do my best to answer them.

They were easy to install and I like the way they look and shine brightly. The new assemblies had the wiring schematic embossed on the back of them, so it was an easy exercise of moving one wire at a time from the old assembly to the new. I used crimp-on wire splices to make the connections, and a dielectric grease to help protect the splices.

I modified the plastic base that is on the trailer to utilize T-nuts instead of simply screwing the screws into the plastic. The lights are way more secure, and I had at least one screw hole that was stripped out. Had to use my pocket knife to trim some notches out of the base so that the hole in the base would line up with the threaded hole in the T-nuts. Easy to do with a sharp blade. A utility knife would have worked well, also. Had to shape the T-nuts a bit to fit the thicker plastic base.

Definitely an improvement!

Looks great and is something I plan on doing as well. I wonder why incandescents are used for the back up lights instead of LEDs?

I'll have to look again, but it seems like I remember seeing a set of lights that had LED backup lights included, but the cost was higher. Enough so that I didn't want to pay the difference just to have LED backup lights.

That is a good price for the tail lights. Makes me wonder if Jet.com's listing really IS for a set of two?
I'll check in to that.

Just got off of the phone with Jet.com, and also checked the trailerparts.com site to see what the total shipped price would be for their item:

Jet.com verified that their listing is for one assembly. Their item will not have additional shipping added (unless you expedite it, I would guess)
The trailerparts.com site added a minimum of $14.06 shipping to their item, to make it approximately $43 to get one to my house.

All in all, both sites have pretty comparable pricing.

We got it at Camping World, made by ADCO. It is a breathable Tyvek material. Might have bought it one size too large, thinking the body of the trailer was 34'. It is actually somewhere between 31' and 32'. It cinches down tight, so it has not been flapping in the breeze and causing problems with the skin of the trailer.

Not too sure this exact cover is still made, and I THINK that ADCO was bought by someone else recently. However, CW still carries covers, so you could certainly find something there that would work.
