New Here

Post by Tom_T »

Well I don't see an "Edit Avatar" in my Profile, so I'll forego adding our Avion at Sunset pic which some of you may have seen over on Airforums' Vintage Kin membership.

We've owned our 1960 Avion T20 #1413 since June 2012, picked it up in Albuquerque in July 2012 from the PO's who had restored & used it since 2007. We've been doing 2-5 California Vintage Trailer Rallies a year since 2013, enjoying it immensely.

Oddly enough, when we got our T20 we thought it was a just a nicely restored & modified galley example, but when we got that "Silver Beauties" CD, we found some Avion factory documents on there which placed ours as the #2 example T20 off the line, & based on the outlines of the original stove, base rear bumper, etc. - there is a possibility that the T20 in the Avion sales brochure pic below could be ours - but nothing for sure, since they used early production units for such photos.

If any of you out there have been to the Ocean Mesa (Santa Barbara) March, Pismo May, Buellton Sept. &/or Newport Dunes Sept/Oct. Rallies - then you may have seen us, & maybe chatted a bit.

There is more info & pix at our respective posts at the linked topics on Airforums - rather than posting too many pix here. I also included a couple of our `88 Westy at a Rally.

Sorry for the sideways pix, but they really are horizontal in my files, & I don't know why they turned on here, nor how to correct them.

Thanks for sharing those pics of your trailer! They are the correct orientation as well--at least on my end.

I just fixed the issue with the Avatars, so it should be working now.

Since my last post, we of course have done more Rallies in the interim, but have added another smaller Aluminum (& Fiberglass) trailer just for the Halibut, & we've been Pucking around with it too since Oct 2018.

It's a 1970 Eriba Puck, German made, USA Export model (i.e.: fitted out with appliances, electrical & LP in Hawthorne CA, after completion of everything else at their factory).

The Puck was designed in the early 1950s - about contemporary with the Avion's design - in conjuction with VW so that it could be towed by the then 1000cc 25 HP Beetles & Buses etc. & other small Euro cars. It weighs in at a spare 660 lbs (gross up to 1000) with a 75 lb HW, & is equipped with 4 pull handles - 2 front & 2 rear to move & position it by hand! .... and we do!

Image

So far we pull it with our 1988 Westfalia, but plan to also do so with our classic 1985 BMW 325e E30 whenever I can get a hold of a factory issue E30 hitch - both of which are leagues ahead of those old `50's VWs in terms of towing it!

Here are some views of the interior - it sleeps 2-3 on the dinette/bed, & the center pop-top gives it about 6' standing room by the Galley & front of the table, galley includes USA 1960s-70s appliances - including 2 burner LP stove with 5 gal LP tank on the tongue, sink with pump faucet to holding tank in cabinet below, & icebox (a 3-way fridge was an option).

What a cool setup! The interior of that trailer looks like it’s in immaculate condition!

You mention “Silver Beauties” CD. Where can I purchase a copy? Thanks, Paul, ‘64 S-18.

Paul, VTS is where we got our copy, as well as a few others & a DVD of "The Long, Long Trailer" - which we play on the flat screen TV/DVD during public open houses at Rallies.

We need to find something along the lines of "The Short, Short Trailer" for play in our Lil' Pucker!

Cheers!

Actually Paul,

By short trailer, I meant our 12' long 660 lb. Puck - which can probably fit inside of either of our Avions! LOL

Maybe I should've said a video on Pocket Sized trailers! ;-)

Cheers!
