1987 34W - Bearing and Grease Seal project

Post by Razorback »

I got to devote some time to the bearing and grease seal project that I have been wanting to do on our 1987 34W. I had ordered, based on available information, The following:

Inner: bearing Timken 25580, cup/race Timken 25520, grease seal National 413470
Outer: bearing Timken LM67048, cup/race Timken LM67010

(I am editing this first post after having found a mixture of 5.2K and 6K axles on our trailer. Everything is the same between the two axles with the exception of the outer bearing and race. I have found a good source for all of the parts, and list them here. I will also add them at the end of this thread, and will see about pinning this list to the Running Gear section:

Outer Bearing for 5.2K LM67048 - http://www.dexterpartsonline.com/product/27-328
Outer bearing for 6K 15123 - http://www.dexterpartsonline.com/product/27-340

Inner Race 5.2K and 6K 25520 - http://www.dexterpartsonline.com/product/25520
Outer Race 5.2K LM67010 - http://www.dexterpartsonline.com/product/27-329
Outer Race 6K 15245 - http://www.dexterpartsonline.com/product/7800055)

You will need a 1-1/2" socket for the hub castle nut.

The first axle I worked on was the curbside rear. Obviously, this is a greasy, messy job, but it went well. To get the cup/race out, I used a small chisel, reaching through the hub opening to get on the lip of the cup/race, and hammered my way around the race little by little until it dropped out. Installing the new cups/races was easy..... tapped them in little by little until it was seated where it was supposed to be. For the inner race/cup, the old race worked well to lay on top of the new race to tap the new one into the hub.
The lists that I had seen showed that the grease seal was a Tekonsha 5606, but while researching I found a National 413470. It appeared to be a much better seal (as reflected in the price!!). They fit as they should, and I am very glad I decided to use them.

Moved ahead to the middle axle. Was surprised when I went to replace the outer bearing and cup/race that it was different! Both were just a bit larger than the previous axle. After doing some research, determined that this hub is rated just a little higher than the other one, and will use bearing 15123 and race/cup 15245. The same was found on the front axle. The inner bearing and race/cup was the same, as was the grease seal. Since I didn't have those new parts, I repacked the ones that were there and reinstalled them. I will replace those once I determine what I have on the street side of the trailer. Looks like I will have a few spare outer bearings and races. That's OK... they are good to have and were not that expensive.

So, that project is almost 1/2 done, the trailer is back on the ground, and we are preparing for a weekend at the lake.

Looks like I have a mixture of Dexter K08-201-90 (5.2K) and K08-201-91 (6K) axles. That would account for the different outer bearings. The current Dexter hub components catalogue doesn't list the 5.2K axle... goes from the 4.4K axle to the 6K.

Continued on the street side this evening. Got the front two axles done. All three of these hubs are the 5.2K hubs, so the timken components that I originally ordered fit as planned. I will need two sets of 15123 bearings/15245 races to finish the curb side, and of course finish the street side rear hub using the other parts I already have.

Almost finished!

Here are a couple of pictures comparing the two grease seals. The one on the left is the National 413470, the right is the Tekonsha 5606. I like the National best. It's almost impossible to see in that first picture, but it has a spring around that rubber seal to keep compression on it.

After finding a mixture of 5.2K and 6K axles on our 1987 34W, I put together a concise list of bearing, races, and seals for these axles and would like to post them here. I found a good source for all of it, and list links for each part. I also added this list to the first post in this thread.... might get it pinned in the Running Gear section:

Grease seal (either one will work):
Single lip - http://www.dexterpartsonline.com/product/27-361
Double lip - http://www.dexterpartsonline.com/product/10-10

5.2K Bearing kit - http://www.dexterpartsonline.com/product/27-086

Here are the Dexter part numbers for 12"x2" electric brake and backing plate assy. Note these are self-adjusting brakes:

12" x 2" NEV-R-ADJUST™ Electric Brake Assy - R.H. / 7k #K23-465-00

12" x 2" NEV-R-ADJUST™ Electric Brake Assy - L.H. / 7k #K23-464-00

I purchased these in August 2017 from Eastern Marine (aka Trailer Parts Superstore). I paid $57.00 each assy. (plus shipping). They are now $70.00 each assy.

I opted to replace the 12" hub and drum assys. Each assembly includes the bearings, races (pre-installed), seal and lug nuts.

The Dexter part number for the assy is K08-250-90.

Refer to https://www.etrailer.com/Trailer-Hubs-a ... -5UC3.html for description and content.

Here is something to add to the archives. It's the pivot bushing for the inner end of each axle. It is pressed into the pin bore through which the pivot bolt is inserted.

Note the part was originally used on 1965-79 Ford pick-up trucks. The bushings are no longer in production. However, I purchased them through a supplier who specializes in obsolete inventory.
