Need a spare tire and rim...

Post by NorthernMaineAvion »

I have a 1978 26-H with 15 inch rims and I and in the process of replacing all 4 tires due to extreme wether cracking. I dont have a spare or even a rim to put a spare on.

Anyone know the bolt pattern I need? I was hoping to find a rim to get myself properly equipped. Thanks.

I bet it's 6x5.5. Hopefully someone can tell you definitively. You might try Chuck Cayo at Cayo Repair in Michigan.

I'd highly recommend going with Light truck tires. I'm not a fan of trailer ST tires, having experienced one separate that was less than a year old. Just imagine the damage to the side of the trailer that can occur. Consequently , I've upgraded to 16" rims and Cooper HT3 rib tires.

Light Truck was what it had on it when I purchased it. They were badly weather cracked on one side and godawful on the other side. It even extended from the sidewalls into the tread on both sides and also between the treads on the worse side. They are getting replaced with ST tires but Bias , not Radial. They are 7.00-15 just exactly the tire specified by the manual. I was not comfortable with the 205/75 replacement size as it was NOT the same measurement as the 7.00-15. I opted for the safe bet this time.

It’s a 6x5.5.

I don’t think there is really anything wrong with trailer rated tires. I just installed a new set of 6 tires and a new spare as my other tires were craxpcked and just sun damaged. . They are speed rated to 75 mph. Really like anything just keep them inflated and check them often while out on the road. When stored keep the tires on concrete or brick pads and cover them up to keep the sun off the rubber.
Next time I’m gonna go with 235/75/15 LT. And I’m only doing that because I dont want the additional cost of 16 inch wheels and tires and 15s are found at any tire shop. But that’s a long time away and I may change my mind.

You will need to determine whether the existing rim is wide enough to accept the 235 width. The width of a 225 may be at max width for your existing rim.

Also, there is a lot of opinion on whether to use LT tires on either the TT or TV. The issue has to do with operating temperature, which can approach 200 degrees. Thicker-construction tires (like LT) can actually have a lower load carrying capacity (LCC) than others because the rate of heat dissipation can degrade its strength.

I'm ordering a new tow vehicle soon and there are several choices on tires for trailer tow, including LT. I came across an article on tire loads that does a good job of explaining all this.

I'll send it along if this thread is the best place to post it or of any redeeming value.
